Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay started to discover her artistic and creative talents in her early years because of her Aunt Denise. The aunt worked as an overnight nurse in order to give her an opportunity to study and literature, or even theater. DuVernay fell in love with the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt recommended it to DuVernay. DuVernay was taught by her that art can be an instrument for social activism. DuVernay was raised by an aunt who was socially aware and taught her how to use the arts as a way of expressing herself. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and raised. Her father recalled watching the historic civil right's march on the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay's summers spent in Selma, Alabama would be the inspiration for her later an animated film on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in the state of California in 1990. In 1990, she completed her studies at the Saint Joseph High School located in Lakewood CA. DuVernay was a college student at the time she began to become fascinated by the production aspect of television journalism. Her first job was as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to observe the house of one of the members of the jury as well as examine their junk. Her work left her dissatisfied with journalism so she decided to move towards the publicity industry. DuVernay was immediately hired from college to be an intern at a small studio. From this position she started her own public relations company called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition to PR, the company created several lifestyle networks including Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
